Whatsapp Account Takeover Scam

Hey there! Just a heads up, there's a new scam going around targeting WhatsApp users and Whatsapp groups. So here's what's been happening: criminals are pretending to be your friend and asking for a security code.

According to Action Fraud, they've already received over 60 reports about this scam that steals access to people's WhatsApp accounts. Here's how it works: the criminals manage to gain access to someone else's WhatsApp account, and if you happen to have that person saved as a contact, they'll start messaging you like everything's normal.

But here's the catch: around the same time, you'll get a text message from WhatsApp with a six-digit code. This happens because the criminal is trying to log in to WhatsApp using your mobile number. Clever, huh?

Now, here's where it gets tricky. The criminal will claim that they sent you their code by mistake or make some other excuse ask you to give it to them. And if you fall for it and give them the code, they'll be able to lock you out of your own WhatsApp account. Sneaky, right?

And guess what? They'll keep using this trick with your other WhatsApp contacts to steal more accounts and commit fraud. So it's really important to be careful!

Here's what you can do to protect yourself: set up two-step verification for your account. Just go to Settings, then Account, then Two-step verification, and enable it. This will add an extra layer of security.

Remember, if a family member or friend sends you a weird request on WhatsApp, always call them first to confirm it's really them. Better to be safe than sorry!

Oh, and never ever share your account's activation code. That six-digit code you get via SMS? Keep it to yourself!

If you receive spam messages, you can report them or block the sender within WhatsApp. Just press and hold on the message bubble, select 'Report', and follow the instructions.

And last but not least, every report matters! If you've been a victim of fraud or cybercrime, make sure to report it to Action Fraud or call 0300 123 2040.

Stay safe out there!
